Improved presentation skills help senior managers speak at industry conferences


Bibby Financial Services is a multinational company and the largest independent invoice finance provider in the UK. The company has nearly 10,000 business customers across the globe and provides over £680M of funding.

The provision of finance to the SME sector is a complex and highly competitive market. The ability to communicate complex issues in a crystal clear way is critical to winning business and maintaining good relationships with clients.

Bibby Financial Services identified a need to improve the communications skills of key staff involved in delivering their services. The company regularly appears The Times list of the “Top 100 companies to work for” and so investing in skills which enhanced employees’ long term careers was in keeping with the firm’s approach to its staff. The solution had to time effective from an employee perspective, and had to be delivered in a day.

Active Presence had to develop a very time-effective approach. The end result was a one-day presenting skills workshop with some additional features. To make the day highly effective participant numbers were restricted to a maximum of five. All participants were required to complete an online survey in the week prior to attending the workshop. Responses to the survey were used to fine tune the workshop contents to the precise needs of that particular cohort.

The workshop itself was highly interactive and recorded to video. All the participants spent a lot of time on stage, presenting to their colleagues and being simultaneously coached. The recordings were heavily edited and an individual edit was created for each participant. The edited videos and course notes were uploaded to the Active Presence learning management system and a user profile created for each participant. In the months following the workshop participants were able to access the learning management system and view the materials created especially for them.

The workshop covered key presentation creation techniques in addition to stage craft and delivery skills.
